§ Challenge

Every report took three hours of manual work in Word, and an issued report must never change years later.

MTSC tests components for the automotive industry among others, in its laboratory in Malaysia. Work orders and tests were already in their own system, but the report was not. It was built by hand in Word for every test: retyping results, placing photos, checking the layout, converting to PDF. Three hours per report. And a report that has been issued must still be exactly the same years later.

§ Solution

An extension of the existing system that builds the report straight from the test data.

We extended the system in Laravel and Livewire without overturning the existing way of working. Results, specifications, equipment and photos are now recorded with the test and the report comes out of it as a PDF, in the fixed house style and with review and signing by the reviewer. Revisions get their own version and leave the original report untouched. The extension also covers the whole planning process and replaces Smartsheet: tests and tasks are scheduled per engineer, and everyone sees in one schedule when which work happens and when a report is due. Around that came QR labels that staff scan with their phone to start a test, and a client portal where clients collect their reports themselves. AI helps with editing test photos, always under the engineer’s control.
